Despite the weather’s best efforts, spring is under way. It’s a first to
be writing for the May newsletter still hearing of roads further north
still blocked by snow! It is indeed a difficult time for many of our
folk, especially the farmers who depend so much on the weather for all
their tasks at this time of year. Let’s hope that by the time you are
reading this the temperature has risen and seeds and flowers have a
chance to germinate.
But whatever the temperature May is a month when we are privileged to be
able to give a warm welcome to everyone who comes to St Mary’s for
whatever reason. Our Open Season begins on 1st May, and our Guardians
will for the next five months welcome visitors to our church each day.
The Haddington Festival also means an influx of folk for various events
and the opening service. And this year a ‘Come and Sing’ event will open
our doors yet again. Of course all this is on top of the welcome we try
to extend to our services each week. It’s going to be a busy month!
Jesus never failed to have a welcome for those he encountered whether he
knew them or not. In the middle of the month we will celebrate
Pentecost, the time when the Holy Spirit came to be with God’s people,
encouraging them in all that their master had left for them to do. In
our time and place it is no different. In the power of the Spirit we are
charged to carry on Christ’s work. May our welcome reflect that,
regardless of the temperature outside!
With every blessing
Jennifer
